Top 3 Diseases that Coffee Drinking May Prevent

People have been drinking coffee for ages, but the question is can coffee drinking protect you from diseases? Many doctors have until now suspected that coffee may have some very bad effects on ones health, but a new story from the National Institute of Health’s website (NIH.gov) debunks this theory. Caffeine, a major ingredient in coffee is a mild stimulate and can even be mildly addictive. It will keep you awake and that’s why many coffee drinkers complain of sleeplessness. Some ingredients in coffee (what exactly is not known at this time) can actually increase LDL cholesterol (that’s the bad cholesterol which causes heart attacks and strokes). Filtered coffee happens to contain less bad stuff, so you probably should be drinking only paper-filtered coffee.

However, there may be a lot of good chemicals in coffee, some of which we don’t even know yet. This is what scientists have observed: there are actually some diseases which occur less frequently in coffee drinkers. These are:

  1. Parkinson’s disease: the disease which makes one shake. Some experts have actually observed in studies that coffee drinkers tend not to develop the disease as much as non-drinkers. Here’s a quote from the NIH website: ‘“When looking at Parkinson’s disease patients, they may be up to 4-8 times less likely to have been heavy coffee drinkers,” says Dr. Wendy R. Galpern of NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.’
  2. Diabetes: a study published in 2002 actually showed that people who drink about 7 cups of coffee a day are 50% less likely to develop diabetes. This is just an observation, but we don’t know why this is happening. Is is because of some special chemical in coffee? or because coffee drinkers tend to drink less sugar-containing drinks? Here’s what the NIH says about that: ‘About 20 studies have now looked into the effect in various populations. “The great majority of studies confirm that coffee is associated with a lower risk for type 2 diabetes,” van Dam says.’
  3. Stress: People who drink coffee, especially in social settings tend to have less stress and live longer with sharper memories!

So a cup of coffee may not be a bad idea afterall.

Fish for your Brain: Eating Fish Prevents Dementia

Did you know that Eating Fish Prevents Dementia? A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirmed this.

The study was conducted in several so-called low and middle income countries of Asia and Latin America. A total of almost 15,000 patients participated in the study. The study found that people who consume a good amount of fish, especially oily fish were less likely to develop dementia later in life.

It’s been well known for some time now that fish oils prevent heart disease, but this is one of the first major studies concluding that fish may also protect you from developing dementia. The more fish you eat, the more protection you get. Here’s the full article.
